BARBARA ANN KARMANOS CANCER INSTITUTE

ABOUT

Headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute (Karmanos) is the only hospital in Michigan focused solely on fighting cancer. While every hospital will do all that they can, Karmanos does things other hospitals just can’t. From groundbreaking research to the most up-to-date therapies and individualized treatment plans, Karmanos is truly leading the fight against cancer. Comprised of 15 locations throughout Michigan, Karmanos is the largest provider of cancer and research in the state. Approximately 12,000 new patients are cared for each year at Karmanos and more than 800 cancer-specific scientific investigation programs and clinical trials are conducted at the hospital. Karmanos is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center in metro Detroit and one of just 51 centers of its kind in the U.S.

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, one of the largest cancer centers in the U.S., is named in memory of the Detroit native who died of breast cancer in January 1989. Peter Karmanos Jr., her high school sweetheart and surviving husband, generously gave a large donation to the cancer research, patient care and education partnership formed a year earlier by Michigan Cancer Foundation, the Meyer L. Prentis Comprehensive Cancer Center of Metropolitan Detroit, The Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State University. He rebuffed any plans to rename the organization. After consideration, he agreed — but only if named for Barbara Ann, as she strongly believed in the work being done by its team.
